What exactly is an 80% frame or receiver?

Think of it as a firearm project that’s about 80% finished. It’s a block of metal or polymer that’s been partially machined, but it’s not yet a functional firearm. That last 20% of machining is what you do, which is why it’s not considered a firearm by the ATF when you buy it. It’s a blank canvas for builders.

Do I need an FFL or background check to buy an 80% frame?

Nope. That’s the whole point for most builders. Since an 80% frame isn’t classified as a firearm, it ships directly to your door with no FFL transfer. You will, however, need to follow all laws when you finish it and build it into a functioning firearm for personal use.

What tools do I need to finish an 80% lower?

For polymer frames, often just a hand drill and some patience. For aluminum, you’ll need a decent drill press or a dedicated jig kit. We sell everything from basic jigs to full router-based completion kits. It’s easier than you think, and we can point you to the right setup for your skill level.

Is it legal to build my own firearm?

For personal use, yes, federal law allows it. You cannot build with the intent to sell. You must also be legally eligible to own a firearm. State laws vary wildly, though. We can’t give legal advice, but we strongly recommend you check your local and state regulations before starting any build.

What’s the deal with ammunition shortages?
